Developing a business plan

Introduction – The Scenario: Hill Country Hospital – Free Nurse Practitioner Clinic – Business Plan
Each of you has been given the task of writing a business plan for your hospital, Hill Country Hospital in Austin, Texas. The hospital is located in an area that has a significant homeless population. Those individuals frequently come into the Hill Country Emergency Room for non-urgent care, and the administration of the hospital has noted the following:
The hospital has decided it will not turn any homeless person away, who is seeking care. It costs the hospital $500 to care fore each homeless person. Also revenue is lost as other ER patients leave without being seen (LWBS). The hospital wants to open a free non-emergency NP clinic across the street from the ER entrance, in a vacant office space, which the hospital owns, which was just vacated by a physician who retired. It is newly renovated, it has four assessment rooms, two small offices, a billing-reception area and a small waiting room, and staff and public half-bathrooms. It is already setup with the equipment and some supplies that will be needed.  (Comment: Matters related to renovations can really impact such a plan, for example if it is an older building that has asbestos insulation in the ceiling, the cost to remove that alone will be about $50,000. In such a case if we are leasing or buying space for such a clinic we would want to have it thoroughly inspected by one who has expertise in such matters.)
The plan for the first year is that the clinic will be open Mondays through Fridays from 700am to 700pm. It will be staffed by two Nurse Practitioners, who will overlap their shifts as one will work from 700am to 300pm and the other will work from 1100am to 700pm. Each will be on an annual salary. You will estimate what their salary would be for the Austin area. In addition there will be one RN on duty at all times, one is full time, the other part-time. Their shifts will not overlap. You can assume 1.5 FTEs for nursing staff, you can estimate what the salary would be for one experienced RN in Austin, Texas, and simply multiply that by 1.5 to determine the salaries for the staff nurses. There will be one clerk on duty at all times, one is full time, the other is part-time. So again estimate the clerk’s annual salary if working 40 hours per week, then multiply this by 1.5 to cover the full time and part time clerk. To keep this simple we do not have a billing department, the clerk will perform any sort of business tasks needed for the clinic, such as ordering supplies, setting up appointments, maintaining patient records, etc. We are going to keep the budget simple, if anyone is off for vacation we simply will fill that time with a prn person from the hospital float pool, who will receive equal pay with no additional benefits charged to the clinic. To determine benefits, again keeping this simple, multiply total salaries by 25% to get benefit pay, which includes insurance, paid time off, and the employer’s contribution for social security, worker’s comp, unemployment insurance, etc.
Other details needed to complete the business plan will be provided in each section of the working template provided below. Some information will have to be estimated as we go through the process. Feel free to estimate all costs, again this is about the process, the precise numbers would be needed in a real world situation, but not in our business plan process. You can check with others in the discussion forum regarding estimated salaries and other costs. You are to create a simple power point presentation to present your business plan for this NP clinic to the administration. This can be done quite simply as a presentation with a white background and black fonts. You will need a title slide, and in the template provided guidelines will be given for estimated slides per section. Art work is not needed. It is understood in a normal real life situation you would have more time for those types of details, there are marketing staff who can assist with that, so all that is needed for this assignment is the content in the form of an outline. Speaker notes are not required. Voice over is not required. The slides can be essentially an outline of what you would cover in such a presentation.
