M4D1: Impact of Culture on Motivation
Although as human beings, we share more similarities than differences, culture plays a very large impact on motivation because the culture in which we are raised impacts our: values; beliefs; norms and mores; verbal and non verbal communication styles; cognitive processing; attitudes regarding the importance of family and community; etc. These, in turn, can all impact the emphasis we place on different needs and ultimately, the goals we pursue and the ways in which we are motivated.
For this discussion, you may want to review the articles on SDT provided in your required readings for Module 2. In the United States and other individualistic cultures, emphasis is placed upon autonomy although there are individual and group differences: for example, females and collectivist subcultures within the United States often place more emphasis on relatedness than autonomy. The ways in which needs are satisfied and expressed are different within cultures, and you will find there is quite a bit of research on these topics.
Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be sure you can earn maximum points.
This activity addresses Module Outcomes 2, 3, & 4. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
